windows 10 upgrade
windows 10 upgrade
using a hp 17 laptop running windows 10 from factory. windows wants to upgrade but it cannot. it wants me to uninstall or upgrade the bios. While I have worked on computers and my desktop started as a barebones kit from tiger direct I have never had to upgrade the bios on any computer. I know if it is not done right the the computer becomes trash. the info on the computer is under the battery(I think), there are no stickers on the back of this machine which I think is odd, I purchased it from walmart. Has anyone upgraded the bios on their computer? Thanks for any and all advice on this.
Re: windows 10 upgrade
I've updated BIOS firmware on several computers without a problem.
The dangerous part is if you lose power to the computer during the update process. Should that happen most likely the computer will be not bootable anymore.
To prevent that on a desktop is having it connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and making sure that the battery capacity is good for at least 15 minutes. The same goes for a laptop, make sure the battery is charged and will work for at least 15 minutes.
The process itself is simple enough. You download the latest BIOS firmware from the website of the computer manufacturer and follow the instructions.

Guess I will have to get brave and try it. Laptop battery is good and will hold it for several hours. Thanks Gerrit!

Re: windows 10 upgrade
now I am having troubles with random reboots. I think it is a driver problem so I am slowly upgrading the drivers. My wife is having the same trouble (she has the same model) so when I find the right one I can fix both of them.
Re: windows 10 upgrade
Windows 10 should automatically update the drivers.
Maybe you need a newer driver that you can download from the support pages of the laptop manufacturer.
Check the device manager (either via control panel- system-device manager or via settings-device manager) for yellow triangles with an exclamation mark. If you find some you will need a new driver for that device.
It can also be that this is standard Windows 10 behavior, check this page: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 389?auth=1
