Windows Works Task Launcher

Post by Glynes » Wed Apr 18, 2018 7:56 pm

I upgraded to Windows 10 about a month ago. It's OK. I think I lost a program that I frequently used, I think Windows Task Launcher was the name. It has been with all OS that I have used, Windows XP, 7, and etc. It had a address book and I addressed envelopes there. I could also type letters and etc. there. My question is did I loose it, and there is others out there but which is most user friendly, simple and compatible with Windows10?
A friend has suggested the following but I don't know if it is compatible with Windows 10.

Hi Glynes, that link you sent is for "Microsoft Works" a program that I have used for years, It came with my 1st computer and I saved the "install" on my external HD and have put it on every computer that i have had since. and it works well with Win. 10 I thought it was outdated years ago so I'm going to download the latest version and see if I like it

Did a little research and found one that will work with Win. 10 but it is no longer free! Amazon has it for $79.00 and I think I would find another program to address and print envelopes.

Windows Works is a very old program and it's not maintained nor sold by Microsoft anymore, the last version was released more than 10 years ago.
Generally it is no good plan to use a program that is no longer supported.

Any good word processor will do what you guys need.
A good office suite which includes a great word processor called Writer is Libre Office. It is open source, completely free and it is being maintained and updated on a regular basis.
Download it here: https://www.libreoffice.org/

Your contacts should have been saved from Windows 7 and should now be available in the app "People".
Type People in the search field and it will show up. If your addresses/contacts are not there you may have lost them in the upgrade.

It's a little too late for that now but I don't trust any operating system upgrade to take care of my important stuff (like documents, photos, music, videos etc.) I always do a complete backup of all that before I do the upgrade. I also check before the upgrade if the programs/apps that I use are compatible with the new OS version.
FWIW I am still using Windows 7 on most systems here and I will most likely not upgrade to Windows 10 as my main operating system at all...

Gerritt, No there's nothing in People. I'm not upset about the loss of contacts, I expected that. I am pretty sure that I had to manually install all contacts when purchasing this computer.
I just didn't and still am unsure which office program I want to install and will be happy with. As I said I enjoyed Task Launcher, because I was familiar with it, due to it was on every computer that I have owned since 2001!

This computer had gotten terribly slow is why I upgraded, having something different, or new is not for me.
Thank you and Gene for your time.

If your contacts are there, your saved documents might be there as well.
Type Documents in the search field and click on the Documents folder.
If some of the documents or envelopes that you made and saved in the past are there, a double click should open the Works program (or Task Launcher).

You could also try to type Works in the search field. If the program was kept during the upgrade, it may show up.

In my Windows 10 installations I am using a start menu that has the look and feel of the Windows 7 (and older Windows versions) You could go ahead and download an install Classic Shelll. It's completely free and you can get it here: http://www.classicshell.net/
Another option would be the program Start 10. It's $ 4.99 but in my opinion it's worth every penny. It's here: https://www.stardock.com/products/start10/

If you install one of the above menus you get rid of the tiles menu that might be nice for a tablet or a touch screen but doesn't really work good in a desktop environment IMO.

Both of these menu programs have the familiar option "all programs" in the bottom of the left pane. A click there shows you all programs that are installed on the computer and you may find Works or Task Launcher there.

Gerritt, I thought we had conquered this problem, but WRONG!

I was doing what you said and below is what I came up with. I tried to insert the screenshot of the envelope after inserting the address. it looked like coding or something. I wish I could get the screenshot to post!

I found saved envelopes ... It opened in LibreOffice ... I found contacts ... I found the way to insert addresses .... but it looked like coding or something. I wish I could get the screenshot to post!

Boy do I have egg on my face?

In order to do that the picture should be available online at a photo hosting site.

I have a photo hosting site available for users of "my" boards. It's here: https://foryourpics.com
Click on the Create account button in the right top
In order to be able to put pictures there you need to make an account. Please use the same name that you use here and choose a good password.
[I will delete accounts from unknown user names without notice, this service is ONLY for users of my boards!]
Also, the service is only meant to show pictures on one of the forums. Since I have limited storage capacity available ( a couple of thousand photos or so) I delete old pics on a regular basis.

You will receive an email and should click the link to confirm.
After you confirmed your account you're in and can start to upload photos.
Click Upload in the right top, next to your account name.
You can drag and drop the picture form your computer.
Click the green upload button.
When the upload finished, scroll down a bit and click "Embed codes".
Scroll down a bit and choose Medium image (linked) and click the copy key.

Now go to Newbies, start your new post or reply and on the spot where you want to add the picture, right click and choose 'Paste' from the drop-down menu.

Something like this will be added to the post, that's the code that will display your picture:

Code: Select all

Make sure you click Preview BEFORE you submit your post. If things worked out right you will see your picture. If not, you must have missed something. Don't hope that when you click Submit that your picture will magically appear, it will not. :D Go back and check everything. Make sure you did everything right and click Preview again. If the pic is there, great, click Submit.

Here's the pic I used above as an example, our two doggies. :D
