Videos Hosted On Certain Sites Will Not Stream

Post by Salmoneye » Sat Mar 12, 2011 4:47 pm

The prime example is PhotoBucket...

Videos hosted there suddenly will not play...This has only been happening for 2 weeks...

I have the latest Flash and Shockwave installed...This applies to only this machine...

Any ideas?

In addition to Gerrit's questions ...

What browser and version?

Do you have another browser on that rig you can try?

Hopefully something totally different (unlike the slight differences between Firefox and Sea Monkey - as an example). I wonder if the browser is stopping the video from playing? Perhaps a config setting that may have been changed recently from an update or plug-in/add-on update.

Yes...All videos on PhotoBucket, always...

No, not only there, but that was the easiest (safest) example
Metacafe will not play either...These are not the only sites...

Other sites including YouTube, Break, and LiveLeak work fine...

I updated Java Runtime Environment this AM thinking that may be it...

No go...

Latest Opera, Seamonkey, and brand new install of K-Meleon just to test this...

None work on certain sites...

I just switched to Mepis on the same rig, and Opera and FF both worked at the sites that do not work on this windows install...

I have my old rig sitting right here, and that can play all the offending sites just fine...Same version of WinXP, and Browsers...

I'm stumped, and the only thing I find searching are mentions of not being able to play FLV files, and I have done all the 'cures' listed...

Dunno...

Maybe that will give us a clue - I'll try to check the source code here and there to determine the way the sites do their streaming.

Java doesn't have anything to do with this but Javascript (something completely different) could. Do you have Javascript enabled?

Another question, what do you see when you try to watch a video? Is the video window there and the player won't start or is the player not showing at all?

There's a pattern - it won't play on this rig either.

I have a suggestion ...

This may be a problem with the player these websites use on their server to stream the video to your browser. So, with that in mind, can you View Source on the web page that should be showing the video? From within the page source, Highlight/Copy the entire URL that is the real URL of the location of the video file. Paste that into another browser or browser tab and hit Enter/Return.

Where I am going with this is to grab the actual storage URL while bypassing their player address. This way you are not subjected to any problems their own player may be experiencing ... you will be using the player on your own rig.

Photobucket may not allow this to be seen in the View Source but other sites may.

Maybe it's the settings for the flash player? On this rig I changed the settings for the Adobe flash player to the most secure configuration. Gonna look at that.

I found this on another site. It may be worth looking at if you run out of other ideas. It sure wont hurt:
Last night after uninstalling both Flash and Shockwave for the umpteenth time, I thought to do a search (Start/Search) on "Adobe", and a second search on "Macromed". Surprise! There were 7 Macromedia files and 23 Adobe files, including application data for each, still on my computer.

This afternoon I methodically deleted each file, rebooted, and went to Photobucket. Instead of getting the endless "Loading" icon, there was a message that Flash Player needed to be installed to view content. The same message appeared at Youtube.

I downloaded the Adobe Flash Player one more time, rebooted for safe measure, and held my breadth as I clicked on a Photobucket video. And IT PLAYED! Youtube is working too.
I copied/pasted - I didn't even attempt to correct mizzspelligz. 8)
