Been thinking about an upgrade and new install

Postby Dieselrider » Sun Dec 31, 2017 10:30 am

Been running MX 15 since it came out and have had pretty good experience over all. Burned an ISO when 16 came out ut, never installed it. Now they have released MX 17 and it looks pretty interesting. Might just have to give it a whirl. Anyone here tried out any MX distro?

Seems to have been pretty painless thus far. All contacts and bookmarks transferred over without a hitch that I can see. Everyting up and running with very minimal down time.

A couple reasons I wanted to make this move are, this OS is supposed to be way better at connecting with android or I phones and will (supposedly) even allow data transfer via Bluetooth with those enabled pieces. Not sure that I will do anything with blue tooth but? The other reason is that it is set up to allow for dual monitors right out of the box. That may be something I take advantage of, if I can make it work.

Have always had trouble mounting printers etc. in Linux. Sometimes could be a real chore. However this time that is not the case. The Brother printer mounted right away as well as the dymo label printer. The only glitch was the scanner side of the brother and that was easily as finding the driver i had on file and running the installer to get it going.

The guys at MX are really on top of this one.

Linux has been improving a lot during the last years. Even more or less complicated configurations are easy these days. F.i. my dual NVIDIA three screens main rig was easy to upgrade to Mint 18.3, everything works out of the box.

I'm seriously considering to switch to Mint as my daily OS when Windows 7 is no longer supported. I have Windows 10 installed on some boxes and a laptop (got to know the OS to support clients), I have a MacBook Pro that I use a lot but I'm pretty sure that pretty soon my main rig will be running Mint predominantly. :)

@DR Make sure you update the Linux kernel sometime next week to protect yourself against Meltdown and Spectre. It should be released on Tuesday.

Downloading MX 17 (via torrent) as we speak. I'd like to see it. :)

Been reading about this over on the MX board. Looks like the latest Debian kernel 4.14 has the patches necessary. Although that is speculation on my part as I am not sure just what the general consensus is. A lot of the discussion is way over my head.

Thanks for the heads up.
